Need help identifying the following Coin/Token. Not sure what it is. It has a hole through it. The front shows a date of 1808 and republique francaise, but the back mirrors the front? Any help? Identified - moved to Exonumia forum - Sap

Obviously Napoleon Bonaparte, but looks very cartoonish. It wasn't even modeled after any real coin design. Some kind of a novelty item.

probably an amulet, since it's a hole on top, and no backside.

Strange piece. In 1808 there was no "French Republic"; as svslav mentioned, France had an emperor at that time. So yes, fantasy piece or medallion. Maybe even a shopping cart token if the size is right ... Christian

Depending on size it could also be a bangle made to hang from a bracelet. I think it was made with the hole specifically for the purpose of being used as jewelry.

It looks plastic. It's seems like one of those plastic coins you can buy at the novelty store for 5 cents a piece.

by 1808, N. Bonaparte had elevated himself from "First Consul" to Emperor, but, anomalous as this now seems to us, the coinage still carried the words "Republique Francaise".
In 1809, the legend became "Empire Francais".
But, I agree that the item in the pic looks very little like a genuine French coin of the Napoleonic, or any other, era. I have quite a few French coins, and even the humble bronze jetons are beautifully designed.

I saw a similar item in my local coin dealer's junkbox, except that the one I saw had the royal (Bourbon) coat of arms on the other side - definitely a mismatch! It had the same gilt-pewter appearance and was also holed. I'd have to agree with the theory that it's a replica/fantasy made for jewellery purposes.

I have the same, but the back IS NOT mirrors the front. The back is exactly the same as front. Any help? Thank you in advance.

I saw this same piece on some "not so nice" looking jewelry at the flea market last weekend.
