Question 1891 Morgan Dollar-S With Not Readable Mint Mark

layman New Member Germany 4 Posts	Posted 01/31/2010 8:55 pm Please help a layman I have a circulated 1891 Morgan dollar witch is not much worth. I use it as a card guard. Someone saw it and told me that the mint mark has a minting error. I always thought that it is not readable because of the bad condition. Has anyone an idea what it relay is? SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 02/01/2010 10:29 am It's a San Francisco mint mark on a well-worn coin; at least one of the punches for that year (evidenced by VAM-10) used a letter with a rather fat stroke, which given wear would morph into what we see in your pic. aladinslamp Pillar of the Community United States 3076 Posts	Posted 02/02/2010 12:12 am he/she was possibly noting the fact that your mint mark is very high, as 1891-s vam13 shows on vamworld.com, there should be scratches within the bow just above the mint mark. can't see enough of the bow in your picture to tell.....there are other points to confirm the VAM, or at least find known error's for that year, go there to check them out...... Neither the VAM-10 I mention or the VAM-13 aladinslamp mentioned carry sufficient premium in worn grades to warrant hiding the coin. Report this Post to the Staff
