I bid on but didn't win this coin today. I love this (well the type anyway) coin and tried not to let that cause me to overpay too much. My max bid was (shipping included) $5.48. It "books" in the 2009 Krause for $2.00 VF and $7.00 XF. I can't grade to save my life yet, so I went in the middle and shaded toward XF. The details looked pretty good, but there is some marking on the Obverse. So, I guess I am asking what the grade of this coin might be (I know better pics would help) and if I was right to let it pass by and wait for a better opportunity. Thanks in advance for helping a newb.

I see in the coin some high point detail and there are no major defects on the rim aqnd field. The coin is an XF for me also.

To me also this looks like an XF-40. I too am rather fond of this type, so I hope you will get another chance to add it to your collection soon. Good luck!

Very nice coin always look for the high points if details are still complete, in this case its the beard and ear at the Obv, and the lion's shoulders and mane at the Rev. These are nicely detailed in this coin, so it's a nice XF. From there the small scratches, slight dings and nice tones if any, would differentiate wether its a high XF or a low XF really very nice coin

Well, bummer. It looked pretty good, but I wasn't sure. I didn't want to overpay. I guess I should have made my max bid a bit higher. I got outsniped in the closing seconds. I think it was someone using a sniping program because their final (and only) bid time was days before. I really dig this coin type and am going to add some to my collection. I am finding my lack of grading ability a real hinderance to my efforts to add coins without overpaying for them. Oh well, maybe next time. Thanks for the help.

I have a spare key date (1923), but it would cost you much more.

How about this one? I know it is kind of hard to tell from the non-close-up photos. (Should I post this in the grading forum?) It is already past the VF book value with shipping, but nowhere near the XF book price (yet.)

The bust of George V looks much better than the one of George VI on colonial coins, I feel. Also, coin collecting is a hobby where you should be patient. These are relatively common coins, so you should find time to wait for a good opportunity ;) Just my thoughts.

I like the George V bust better as well. I do have a patience issue, which I freely admit. I also have a low budget, so I am trying to avoid paying $7-10 for a $2 coin. I literally can't afford those kind of mistakes.
Maybe I'll hold out for a nice George V E.A. Shilling, but I do have interest in the entire series. This is probably the grade range that my budget will allow at present however.

Sorry, not trying to hi-jack your thread but, Quote: I have a spare key date (1923), but it would cost you much more. What grade would that be? I would be interested if it is Uncirculated.
