While looking at my Morgans, I discovered my 1897S has a filled S, and the bottom half of the S is about half as thick as the top half. Is this a fairly common occurance with Morgan dollars? I have 26 S Morgans, and, of the 26, this is the only one with the mint mark in this condition.

now this could be a repunched mint mark or a S/S but better pictures would be a must to attribute that because they are rather hard to see in hand so it would take a very close up picture to be able to even begin to make out what it actually was

I reckon I'll have to wonder about it for a mite longer. Those are the best pics I could come up with, and, as you pointed out, it's difficult to tell anything for sure by them.
One other thing while I'm on the subject of this coin - under magnification using a little TRIPLET 20X-20.5MM, I see a small thin raised piece of metal just out from the D in DOLLAR at about 2:00 o'clock. I assume that's out of the ordinary too?

You can try cropping those pics on a photo-editing software to make them bigger. That might help with identifying it. But either way I think it's out of the ordinary.

cropping those pictures aren't going to help because they are so blurry you still wouldn't be able to make out the details to see what variation of a double mint mark it is (there are many VAM's with different looking S/S)a clearer picture would be essential for attribution of which specific VAM it may be

A little closer scan of the S - still a mite fuzzy, but I'm getting better with this scanner.
