1983 Lincoln Memorial Cent / LMC Weight?

It is slso about the right weight for a dime (2.27g nominal). I have never heard of a dime being plated and struck as a cent but I suppose it could happen. How about some pictures of the coin? Even the rim looks normal which means that the blank was probably the right diameter (not a dime). It may just be a thin planchet. The weight of 2.2 grams should be well out of tolerance but I really don't know what the specs were in 1983 (it would be nice if the mint would publish a definitive list of coin specifications and tolerances every year). If it is just a thin planchet, the question is how common was that in 1983? Report this Post to the Staff

Your cent was undoubtedly struck on a planchet punched out of rolled-thin stock. Among zinc cents, these can get as light as 1.6 grams. Among copper-ally cents, the weight can be as low as 1.4 grams.
