This is a 1894-O Morgan with the usual "O" strike. These are scans of the coin, which I think was a mistake by the seller.I know scans are almost impossible to grade, but try grading on detail alone. I bought this one for his opening bid, I think because of his scan pics and people mistaking the weak strike for more wear than I think it actually has.

MS62. I'm going a little lower on this one because of the wear on the breast feathers. Scans don't show luster so I hope she has more (for your sake). Others will probably go 1 higher. See, no major dings or marks on her face! This one I like!

Phew. Toughie. My gut says it's a slider, but if it came back 62-63 it wouldn't surprise me. I want to revisit this in a few hours for a second opinion.

I'd have jumped on that coin for $200.

Wow...great deal you got there then. I'll say MS-62 with a weak strike.

Terry, like most O Mint Morgans, this is a weak strike although we've seen weaker from N'Orleans. Given what appears to be an absolute lack of circulation marks (although with some imagination, I might see some if I squint my eyes), I'm inclined to go with Mint State over very lightly circulated. The rims seem clean with not even tiny dings as far as I can tell, a giveaway with many lightly circulated Morgans. However, without seeing the luster, I am hesitant to put a number on the MS. Indeed, it's even possible it's been cleaned or dipped, but that's what scans make coins look like. As you said, big mistake on his part.

All else aside (luster, possible circulation, possible cleaning) and presuming it's mint state, I think it might grade out at MS-62 or even -63 at ANACS; NGC and especially PCGS would likely market grade it out lower.

However, this is another which really needs to be examined in the hand before anything conclusive is determined.

When you get it, please let us know what you think.

I'm with Dave on this: you could be arrested for Grand Theft Morgan .

However, the usual cautions: maybe this seller knew something about the Morgan that wasn't revealed in the auction. If, when you get it and it proves to be all that we can see from here, you've got yourself a winner . What I don't understand is why others didn't also take a chance and bid on it. They didn't see or read anything that you didn't. Can the economy and expendable money be so tight that most people are no longer willing to take a chance? Even a dealer?

Fingers crossed, Terry!

Thanks Fred,
Yes,its hard to tell what I really have there but for the price I thought it was worth the chance. If it has been cleaned I can't see the usual hints of it.Even in a scan the cleaning will usually show up around the star area as discoloration.I couldn't understand why others were not bidding on this coin either.I kept asking myself what am I missing here? I watched it and studied it for days and just couldn't find anything wrong with it from the scans anyway and figured its worth a shot, nothing ventured, nothing gained. The seller has 100% positive feedback and a return policy. If it is what I think it is,It's going to ANACS and if it came back AU50 I would be ecstatic.

Oh and someone did try to snipe it from me,the original price was $69.00 I believe what happened with this auction is what I see happen with many, many auctions. When the seller starts his auction with a high starting price people just don't bid.I believe if he would have opened the bidding at $9.99 you would have seen a lot of bids on this coin and it probably would have went for a lot more $. I know it doesn't make sense but I have seen this happen hundreds of times. Also, the coin was not listed under " Morgan dollars" it was listed in U.S. coins and paper money! It had only 29 views.A coin of this year should have had four times that many.

Ah yes, it's the old "something for nothing" trick where people won't bid on an item since the start price is high. Even if the start price is well below market, people skip right over it. Same/same Buy It Nows with auction start prices only slightly lower than the BINs. I've picked up a number of good deals by putting in a snipe on one of these type auctions while others have let it go by. I've seen two otherwise identical coins up for bid wherein one has a high start price while the other starts out low. The low one gets the bids, often goes way higher than the other which just sits there unsold. A lot of coin sellers just don't have a clue and don't understand how ebay works. Good move on your part, Terry!

Mis-listing isn't so common, but if most potential bidders don't use the ebay Favorite Searches function which ignore the correct category, then they'll miss it. I have no idea on the percentage of people who shop ebay only by scanning each category, but certainly in this instance, it threw a lot of people off. The only problem I have with Favorite Search subscriptions is the 15 or so emails I receive every morning; they get reviewed or, if I don't have the time, get dumped, but at least I can keep up with the market and maybe find something good.
