As a collector of SLQs, I like to familiarize myself with the general appearance of some of the better dates. Something is extremely fishy with this ebay ANACS graded one....

Thanks vermont, and I agree it looks cleaned. My real problem though is that I really question the authenticity of that SLQ for several reasons.
-The strike doesn't look likey any other 27-s type strike I've seen. Too bold
-The date does not appear recessed like all other post 25 slqs should have.
-The mintmark is huge compared to what I've seen.
Is there some majorly "different" 1927-s die that was used to strike a few?
Rest in Peace

If you question all those items I guess the next step is to question the slab. Not unusual to see fake ones these days (unfortunately). If authentic it's still a nice coin.

The only thing that really jumped out at me was the date area. The recession like you mentioned, but also that the 2 is lower than the 9, and the 7 is lower than the 2.

I can't find a match for the date; the bottom of the 7 is unusually fat and placement is unusual. This may just be a rare variety but I'd definitely shy away from buying it.

Great details with drab color. Probably had a cleaning way back when. Wish it was a "D". nlp

Yeah, the date and mint mark look strange....not that I have a lot of 27-S SLQ's to compare it with.

Check out Heritage lot 7864(I dont think I'm allowed to post the link). The same ANACS serial number and grade of 27-s, but a completely different coin. The slab looks the same to me(though I could be wrong on that); so my guess is that the slab was tampered with and a new coin inserted.

That could be very possible Johnny. It does have some strange device characteristics. You know, this would be the perfect grade for a counterfeiter to make, given that its not out of the reach of most collectors. I just looked at my PCGS VF35 and yes, there are differences. Hmmm....

Thank you for the input vermont! The seller removed the listing. I guess someone informed either him or ebay about it.
