There were actually quite a number of Newfoundland coins that popped up at my LCS. They were worn and/or slightly dinged up, but I bought a number of them and re-sold them. I took what I wanted to, but just seeing this thread and then realizing the rest I didn't buy were melted makes me wonder just how scarce these really are.

One thing to remember about the Newfoundland coinage is that it joined confederation in 1949 and a lot of people saved some of their coins as mementos. A friend of who grew up in Newfoundland in the 1960s said that basically everyone had a few, which is why the 1940s coins are not super-rare.

I just stumbled upon this thread. My congrats to DBM for posting a Nfld "coin" (the tree cent piece) I'd never seen. Anybody who collects Nfld coins and doesn't know him should read up on Joey Smallwood, a very interesting character. In the run up to the three-choice referendum that lead to Nfld becoming a province of Canada, Joey was a tireless campaigner for joining Canada. And, of course, the results of the referendum effectively ended the Newfoundland coin series.

Hi. Just wanted to touch base since I am starting to collect Newfoundland coins as well. Since I live in Newfoundland I may be able to help you with your collecting if that were helpful. Excellent information in your post, BTW. Thank you for sharing.

Hey there,
I started collecting Newfoundland coins a few years ago and took a break. I attended a coin show this past Sunday and I have the bug again. I'm interested in learning how to grade coins so I can put together an accurate description of the coins in my collection without paying someone else to do it. Is there a specific thread where I can post pics to get grading opinions? Thank you!

Yes, post your NFLD coins photos for grading in the Canadian coin grading section.

My latest NFLD acquisition.: 1880 Oval 0, PCGS AU-53.

A tough, tough coin in better grades. In the PCGS population reports, there are only known in mint state condition, and only two higher than this one at AU-55. This one is tied with two others in this grade. Thanks to CCF member TheCoinHunter for getting this one to my hands...
