Hey everyone, I have been trying to learn grading as much as I can, and I was wondering opinions on this one..these are the sellers pics, but I will post some more up if needed. Just trying to see where I fit in with my guess. I am very very very very very very new to this, so anyones grade will help. thanks. mike   |

The O mint coins are a tricky series, from your pics this coin is mint state even with the flat breast.
The new orleans mint put out coins which were very sharply struck to very mushy and flat due to some problem with the pressures on their presses, numerically I would grade this coin as an MS-63 possibly 64 in hand depending on the luster of the coin which is flat in the scans.

So, do you think it is worth it for me to get this professionally graded? I have just acquired a couple coins, so I am not sure on the process.What could the value of this coin be? any guesses?

I don't suggest anyone use the TPG's, I am a raw coin collector, I personally would not, others will have a differnet opinion based on this particular coin, it jumps sharply in value in mint state above 63. |

Ok, so I have the Red Book in front of me, and I am looking around online, I would still like everyone who looks at this post to put up their own grade on this one, but lets say for now its a 63..what would this be worth in auction? I understand some people are raw collectors, but if I were to sell this today as RAW vs. PG what would the difference be? This is where most of my conflicts come in..Its kinda like looking at a paining, some of us would think it is a beautiful work of art, and others would think their 2 year old daughter could draw that with a crayon...anyway, what is the best way to figure out what our collection is worth without actually selling it...I get that "it is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it" but there has to be some scale that doesn't jump from $40 to $1200 because of someones opinion? mike. |

New Orleans mint Morgans are generally weakly struck which this one appears to be. Based on the photos and marks on Ms Liberty's face I would grade this coin at AU-58.

you can research completed auctions ,teletrade,heritage, and ebay for an Idea of true market value. I still don't see any wear on the coin, I would let this run a bit for more opinions on the grade before you seek values. |

I'd grade it AU cleaned based on the pics, but could be better. Pics can be deceiving

AU 58 these coins are often flatly struck but this one also appears to have some light rub from wear and also the photo is not showing enough luster for me to think it could be MS , does it exhibit cartwheel luster in hand? If so, is ut unbroken across the high points? If so it may indeed be a flatly struck 62 or 63

I can't tell if its AU or MS. Man you picked a good one to share. What looks like "rub" in the photo may not appear the same in hand. I'd need to have that one in hand for me to tell. But, I'm certainly no expert.

The cotton boles look full to me. although the scans are pretty small to say there is not a little bit of rub on them.

any guesses on the value of this one...I will post some pics, It looks shiny in my hand, like I can reflect light, is that what you are asking? Ballpark selling price on this one. The year and mintage jump a lot from the au grade, so I just want a idea, It will be in my collection for a long time, but a good starting point reference would be great.

I grade this AU 55 (details) It appears cleaned. Lighting plays a role when viewed as a picture, but so does luster. The picture represented lacks luster.

Ok, so I am inspecting this coin. And I cannot see any signs of cleaning. I finally decided to "learn" what cartwheel luster is, and this coin displays it beautifully. I am now on the fence if I should send this one in. If it makes ms grade, it could be worth a bit of money. Any thoughts? I will also take another scan tonight, and try to upload a video onto YouTube to see if you can see "cartwheel" luster. Hey, thanks again everyone for all tour help, and patience. I am just entering into this world of coins..
