Hi there,

I got another one from a coin shop today, 30 miles from my place, and I think I chanced upon a VAM, but I didn't noticed the scratches til I started to take detailed pictures. Can you please let me know what you think:

-Is it a VAM 23A - tripled 8, doubled 9, pitted reverse?
-What would you grade it? AU?...Reverse has more luster than obverse
-Does that cut on the edge of the Obverse (viewed left) from the die or a post-minting damage?
-Are those marks on the reverse from cleaning or circulation?
-Was it a bad buy at $32?

Again, thanks in advance for all your help.

The cut on the edge is PMD. (Post Mint Damage)

The marks on the reverse are from cleaning.

Some of the scratches on the back appear to be die scraches. Are scraches into the metal or are they raised.

The hit on the obverse could be a wire strick over when mited.

Could be MS60/61.

Looks like a great strike for an O MM.

Here's some more magnified pictures of the coin through my microscope...looks like some scratches came from the die (eagle's neck), but most of them came from cleaning . That white material on the "F" looks like a residue from a cleaning agent. I have also attached a pic of the cut, and as you can see there are light bluish particles in the cut...could be particles from the surface of the material that cut the coin.

So my question is...given the condition of the coin...is it worth keeping the coin for collection (coin album)? or should I try my luck returning it to the coin store I got it from (or probably ask for a replacement)? Thanks for your comments.
