Ebay Coin From Leiden & Flanders? - Coin Community Forum

Haven't been able to find out much about it. I know Leiden is a municipality within South Holland, but this coin perplexes me. Any details on it? bart Pillar of the Community Belgium 651 Posts	Posted 04/25/2011 02:24 am The attribution of the second seems right to me: PHS DG HISP REX COM FL means: Philippus Dei Gratia Hispaniarum Rex Comes Flandriae (Philip II by the grace of God king of Spain, count of Flanders). I believe to read the date as 1576 and between 15 and 76 there is the lily mintmark of Bruges. With a diameter of 26 mm this should be 1/20 Philipsdaalder. Ref. bart Pillar of the Community Belgium 651 Posts	Posted 04/25/2011 3:59 pm I found some background information about the first coin, on this Dutch website : http://www.loodjes.nl/Leiden.html Leiden is a town in South Holland which is still famous for its University. The coin is an emergency coin, issued for the St. Catherine Hospice (Wikipedia-page in Dutch: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sint-C...uis_(Leiden) ) in 1573. Obverse:a crowned St. Catherine's wheel Reverse: City arms of Leiden with date 1573 and legend "GEDENCT DEN ARMEN" (Think of the poor) The coin has a value of 1/4 stuiver (or 1 oord).
