I am a bit out of the loop when it comes to US coins, but I do recall that 2009 Roosevelt dimes were considered scarce in circulation since few were released to banks in 2009. I must say that I am not certain that I have ever received a 2009 in my change. So are they still considered unusual in circulation, or have many been released in recent times? Thanks!

They're...somewhat hard to find, but they are out there. if you dont find them in circulation, you'll most likely get one through roll-searching. Through a combo of the two I've found 11 P dimes. I've even found a D (I'm on east coast, so a 2009 D is pretty rare).
As to them being released in recent times, it doesn't seem like it (at least where I live) because like I said, they are still kind of hard to find, but I don't know for sure

JangoFett- Thanks for the input!
So does anyone know if there are supposedly tons still in Fed. vaults which will be released, or might they end up being of the the least common US circulation coins of recent times?

I don't think the fed has much, I'm more confident that people started hoarding them as I did as soon as those figures started showing low mintage. So its probably collectors and investors who are keeping rolls, boxes of them stashed away. I know I have a bit. lol

So what was the mintage for the P & D 2009 dime? I am just surprised that they are being hoarded. After all, any coin with a mintage over a million cannot be rare (unless a vast percentage was melted or destroyed in some other way before or after leaving the mint).

According to the mint's web site, the mintage for 2009 P was 96.5 million and 2009 D was 49.5 million. Neither is rare by any means. But these numbers are far lower than any other year since the 1950's. I have never seen one in circulation. I remember reading back in 2009 that isolated places around the country had reported getting these. So they were released, but I think not everywhere. I doubt the Fed has any left now. But you never know...

Without roll searching, I consider myself lucky because I have managed to get a 2009 Dime from each mint without even roll searching or even looking very hard at all. I seldom do see any 2009 coins at all.

You think the dimes are scarce? Try finding a 2009-P Nickel. I've been through almost 20 boxes and not one of them. Found a scarce 1950 nickel, but not one 2009-P! Pretty unbelievable if you ask me.

I have found a 2009-D (just one) in an entire $100 box. Zero 2009-P! Infact, in that box I searched there were more Buffalos (two) than 2009 (just that one).

well... it is really rare in circulation. Haven't found one yet. But I looked them up on ebay. It seems that a guy has more than 10 boxes (sealed) of 2009 D dimes. So don't worry, if you finally cant get one from roll searching, at least you can buy some rolls of 2009 dimes online for a reasonable price.

I have found 4 2009D's and not a one 2009P but that was only around 40 or so rolls I have gone through.

They are starting to show up a little more lately. I suspect that those 2009 Cent coins started many people thinking all 2009 coins would be valuable in the future. Sort of like those that went goofy over the Becentennial Quarters. Hoarded them and later found no big thing.

I find 2009-P dimes a bit more commonly than nickels, and I don't have that much trouble finding the nickels. I have stated saving them though. I have about half a roll of the dimes from my last two boxes. No Denver mint though, and I've found several 2009D nickels (though I have been looking for those for longer). I have much more trouble finding the 2009 pennies. I only have about 40 total out of about $100 worth of penny boxes that I've searched, about half are the log cabin ones, about a third are the rail-splitter, the rest are the "professional life" ones, and I had to trade to get the fourth one, and I was only able to find one rail-splitter 2009-D, the rest I had to trade for to fill my book. The upside is that I've found several of the DDR for the log cabin design.

I am in the east and have only found a D so far. Go figure you would have thought it would have been a P.

I think it will be a long time before we see this in quantity in change. Relatively few were minted and people widely hoarded the BU rolls by the box.

At some point everyone that needs one will have one. In my opinion, the unjustified premiums will eventually disappear. Once people realize that they horded them for no real reason, they will be dumped into circulation.
