Good morning! Have recently started looking at notes (not yet ready to buy, just browsing). Came across this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ht_500wt_949$50 Specimen note. I have found another link for this note here (from a website saying this is what it looks like): http://www.australianstamp.com/Coin...19733deo.gif(thanks to the owner of this site!) There are a few slight differences between the notes where the word "specimen" is stamped. (Where it cuts AUST, 50, and the serial number best place to see this). - Should I therefore assume this is a fake? Or my other question was; is the word "specimen" stamped on after printing, which would account for the difference? - It's a type 3 Phillips-Wheeler note. Appreciate input. Thanks all. They both look ok to me, printing is not precise just take a few circulating banknotes and you will see a difference.

Yes. If I had a note worth $22,000 sell for $3500 I'd be bitterly disappointed too. Mind you, if I had any numismatic lots worth a great deal of bucks I'd be selling them through an auction house, not an internet site.

no: specimens fetch a lot more, because there's a lot less of them.
Non-collectors understand that they are not "money", and therefore worthless; so they are mystified at the prices collectors pay.

I am sceptical about buying such a note on good ol ebay from a seller with a 10 rating and nothing else for sale germandy88 ( Feedback Score Of 10) 100% Positive feedback Realistically this sale is SUSS |

last year there were a lot of specimen $50 & $20 offered on ebay by a vendor in Croatia. I queried some aspect of the "notes", and it transpired that he'd only accept AUD or USD cash, through the mail. My confidence was not enlivened, so I did not bid. There aren't many of these around, but I think I'll wait until I find one in Oz before I buy. A thought that I can't shake out of my head: with the "SPECIMEN" overeprint, they were never legal tender. So copying one, by whatever means, would not amount to counterfeiting. A lucrative loophole, it seems to me. So I'd be very careful about examining anything I bought. P. |

Ha! you make an interesting point Peter... and timely for me as I have just started reading "Heads I Win" the story of David Gee - Australia's Most Audacious Coin Forger! now where did I put that red specimen stamp? LOL
