Hi I had this coin given to me a fair few years ago and have struggled to identify it. I know much of it is missing so it makes it quite difficult to find out what it was.

I am guessing the coin was cut because it was a pirate coin? Thought it may have been a spanish coin on its way back from south america?.

The visible date of 1717 helps... it's a Mexico City 1/2 real and should weigh just under 1.7 grams.
If genuine, this coin will be worth at least a couple hundred dollars in this condition, as they are quite rare. From the pictures I believe your coin looks just fine for the type, but it's always important to check the weight.
The coin is not really cut, it's stamped this way.
