Struck Through Grease Or PMD? - Coin Community Forum

specksynder Pillar of the Community United States 1080 Posts	Posted 07/30/2011 5:38 pm Picked this up today while sorting through dimes at the dealer. It's an old, worn dime, so it may be tough to tell, but it looked to me like it was Struck Through Grease. Then I got it home and used some acetone and xylol (xylene? I always get them mixed up) to clean off some of the crud. Now it looks like maybe a pair of pliers could have created that imprint. Opinions? Report this Post to the Staff

Is it? If so, that points to mint error. Thats what it looks like to me. Report this Post to the Staff

After cleaning it, my initial thought was someone took a stack of dimes and crimped them in a pair of pliers -- hence the marks on one side only. However, the lack of detail on "URIBUS" and the lines that are in the deep spots of the design make me think this may have happened during minting. Report this Post to the Staff
