Hello, new member here. I've been navigating these pages discussing pennies and wanted to ask a question.

I'm partial to Lincoln cents myself and when I go to my local bank and ask for rolls of pennies, they always say they don't have any. After several different times asking this question over several months, I asked the teller when do they get rolls of pennies in. She said she didn't really know, that I should check with other branches. I really felt like they didn't want to bother with me for rolls of 2009-2011 Lincoln's, but they are a bank for goodness sake! Is there a secret to dealing with your local bank for things like this that a collector would seek out?

Asking for rolls and roll searching has been a topic of many posts here... however this is strange.

I think you may be asking in a strange manner, I just say that I would like to get 5 dollars worth of pennies and they just bring em up. Nothing else really to say.

Why wouldn't you just go to another bank?

I currently work from home and don't have to go out to the bank too often, and the branch closest to me is the most convenient. I could just go to another one when I think about it while out running errands. I would ask for $5 in pennies but I am specifically looking for new rolls of 2009-2011 Lincolns, and I've had some rolls that were mixed with assorted circulated dates.

No big deal, I'll just keep checking. I had seen a post here where a bank had contacted a member and notified him of 18 boxes of new cents if he wanted them. Guess I need to get to know my bank tellers a little better!

Just go to a random bank and say I want (insert amount here) of rolled pennies. If they don't have them then honestly they are ridiculous.

REMEMBER YOU are the customer and they are SUPPOSED to please you-not that they always do though.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're specifically asking for new rolls of 2009-2011 cents?

If so, the tellers are being perfectly professional and honest. They really don't know if they will be getting solid boxes of new cents or not when they get their coin orders.

I'm having the opposite problem with dimes right now...

Yeah you can't expect new rolls from 2009 to 2011. And odds ate that tge only new rolls you will get are the 2011 rolls. And the banks dont really know when when they get new cents. When they order boxes from the fed, it is random. They can get new our old cents. So if you are going to the banks specifically for these new cents, then good luck.

Yes, its pretty much hit or miss whether you get solid rolls of a particular coin or mixed date rolls. Most of the time they will give you the mixed rolls, but occasionally you will get solids (this is more likely with boxes). The banks get whatever the Fed ships them, solid or mixed.

Yes, but to within their capacity. If they really don't have cents to give the OP then that's that. Just have to try other banks.

Well if you get enough posts you can try to buy rolls of Pennies through CCF. Many members have saved "bricks" of pennies. Personally I have a "brick" of 2010P pennies. $25 Unsearched. I have a few loose unsearched rolls too. I just dont know what to do with them. There is no profit to all these pennies (even though in the early part of 2010 they were sold on ebay for $60+ not including shipping).

If you ask for specific coins you are most likely going to get a "I dont know" or "Nope" response. Ask if they have any shotgun rolled pennies (these are more than often going to be non-collectors mint rolls) or just ask plainly for pennies.

Or even better go out on a bank run and hit 3 or 4 banks in the area. Most areas in town have a few different banks spread out a 1 mile radius.

File a DBA and open a business account. The banks will have or order any rolls you want.

Great responses folks, thanks.

To clarify, when I say I have asked for 2009-2011 rolls, I did this in the year they came out. I really don't have to go the bank that often (about once a month/6 weeks). I can't justify paying $4 a roll at a coin show or ebay when I figure I can get them at face value from my bank. However at this point I may end up doing that!

Thanks again for the insight.
Rest in Peace

For my business I get a couple of rolls of dollars and a couple of halves every week, plus random dimes, nickels, quarters and pennies (and about a hundred in $2 bills). All of the tellers at my bank recognize me, look out for unusual coins or bills for me and call me when they find something fun. Despite this, they have only once in three years found solid rolls of new pennies for me. It's random. I get more silver halves than new penny rolls.

If you want uncirculated coins like pennies, nickels and dimes credit unions always have them. I found this out from a Chase teller. Hope this helps.

I think some are misunderstanding what was happening. The bank wasn't refusing to give the OP rolls of coins, they were just saying that they didn't have and could not get rolls of all same date new pennies just by ordering them. Which they can't. Except for Pres. dollars, banks can't specify new or old coins, mixed date or solid date rolls or anything other than the denomination. If they get rolls of brand new pennies, its pure chance.
