Hey grovey, now your getting back to the years I love! I can't tell for sure, but are the denticles chewed up a bit? Also the tone line on the obverse, if its not a shadow tells us the storage of the coin changed and perhaps the coin was cleaned a long time ago. I don't see any wear on the feathers, breast or feet/claws on the eagle. Lady Lib looks untouched except for a few small nicks on the cheek. That is a prime focal area. Otherwise I'd say you have a low 60's mint state coin. Very pretty, and nice and old! Mike

My first guess would be that this coin was in jewelry at some point. Other than that, looks like a strong MS-60 or 61.
Rest in Peace

The coin was cleaned a long time ago which can be seen around the lettering on the obverse. Still a VERY nice coin that I would grade a MS-62.

Mike,
Your lyrics (in sig) crack me up! Quoting sublime- they have some amusing lines that aren't approprite on a family forum such as this- always try to catch the spanglish in "caress me down"
Pon la nalga en el aire if you know who you are
con el nalga en el aire empieza gritar
no tenga miedo I’m your papí
take your chones y los manden a mí
Love the Ron Jeremy reference in that song as well...
Don

Tragic end to a talented young man, with a brand new baby he should have been caring for. Drug addiction is horrible. Mike....Sublime is not for children!

me gusta reggae
me gusta punk rock
pero la cosa que me gusta más es panochita

You mean these sorts of lines? - I didn't understand that reference for the longest time...

Brad Newell died in a hotel room in my fair city, of a heroin OD, for those unfamiliar with sublime's body of work. (those of you who think you are unfamiliar would likely recognize many sublime tunes if you heard them- they were all over the radio in the mid and late 90s- and of course became a big hit after their frontman died). For many years in that time period San Francisco was in the top five cities in the US for heroin related hospital admssions per capita (number 2 behind the garden state's Newark one year Susan)

from Rolling Stone:
'Bradley Nowell died on May 25, 1996, in a San Francisco hotel room, after shooting up some heroin that was much more potent than the brown Mexican tar he was used to. His death came seven days after his wedding to Troy Denkker, who'd given birth to their son, Jakob, 11 months before the release of Sublime, the album that would make his band famous. The heroin death of the Smashing Pumpkins' touring keyboard player, Jonathon Melvin, got more attention in the press. In fact, plenty of Sublime fans don't even know that Nowell is gone. "We still get lots of letters for him" says Brad's father, Jim, who handles his son's estate. "I have a boxful of them in my office.". At least a boxful. By April 1997, a little less than a year after Nowell's OD, Sublime had entered Billboard's Top 20, and the album's first single, the breezily grooving, mostly acoustic hip-hop toaster "What I Got", went to No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart. And that was only the beginning. Throughout 1997, Sublime produced hit after hit, and the album has sold more than 2 million copies to date. The follow-up to "What I Got" was the reggae-tinged ballad "Santeria"; then came the shuffling ska of "Wrong Way" and the dance-hall-flavored "Doin' time" which Nowell constructed around the melody of the Gershwin standard "Summertime"

I suspect that these is a mistake in this article- "black tar" and "brown powder" are heroin from Mexican poppies which is refined in using slightly different methods- the former was and remains the prominent form on SF streets. ( US west coast gets far less heroin from European sources than does the east coast. Of course with opium production up worldwide, particularly in afghanistan, which has reclaimed it's title of worldwide leader in opium production when the US comitted enough forces to defeat the taliban, but not enough to capture Osama Bin laden nor to actually control the country)

Grovey,
nice coin! Are you working on older halves now?

SFDukie, seems your a fan! Let's not forget the very "comical" (read dark) Date Rape, one of the early efforts played often on alternitive radio. It did offer a bit of a good advice to those boys out there who may be thinking about taking advantage of a situation! Mike

I adopted a few new cats. You will be seeing them in my AVATAR spot over the next few days. No one else wanted them but I thought they were all cute!

Mike,
It is tough keeping up with your lyrical signatures. Want to know what you're listening to these days.
Sadly, date rape was the only Sublime song I had heard at the time Newell died. They sounded like a fun band to see live- it is sad when talented folks have such demons and /or fall for the whole "party/rockstar" thing... So many depression and drug OD deaths in the mid 90s- Newell, Cobain, Garcia, etc.
Rest in Peace

SFDukie, anything from Hank Williams to Our Lady Peace! Nirvana was the best substantial change in rock and roll since the Beatles IMO. Cobain was another sad and tortured soul.....Mike
