You mentioned thinking about picking it up so I assume you think it'll grade higher. I have to strongly disagree. I think this coin is a VF-20 i.e. bottom of the barrel VF. The letters of LIBERTY, while all present, are not very good. The ribbon end is certainly worn down too much to be a XF. The entire reverse is surprisingly bad. In fact, the reverse is probably one usually found on F/VF pieces. The color makes me have doubts it's original. Even if it is, the yellow is just not attractive. I wouldn't touch this coin at $130. F is worth about $60, VF about $120....honestly I probably wouldn't give you more than $80 for it, if it was a coin I wanted.

Just my opinion though.

Looks nice but I don't know these to help much.

Using my RedBook grading descriptions though, I'd say VG, some of the headband letters are readable. Fine would need LIBERTY mostly readable.

I've bought from these folks before, sometimes will reasonably negotiate. But, I do it on the phone and usually with Gary. As with most, initial asking price is at least 50% too high.

Good luck, Jim

Since my Dansco consists of VF20 through XF40 coins, a VF20 is not out of the question; in fact, most of my coins thus far consist of mainly VF20-VF30 coins. I have bought from this seller before and have been quite pleased with the coins. In fact, most grade higher in hand. I was not planning on paying $130 for this coin. I was going to throw a much lower figure at him. He has taken my offers before.
BTW, thinking about picking up a coin is just that. I can't tell if it's a higher grade until I get it in hand. Pictures can only do so much.

Nice coin. I would say F-15 due to the weakness in Liberty. Yeah, I would shoot for a much lower price, and remember you have to factor in sales tax...:-P

Ha...I know John, he is in California. I try not to buy anything from sellers in California because I noticed most charge sales tax. I've offered him prices before, that pretty much cancelled out the taxes, and I still saved a few bucks on the FMV of the coin.
BTW, I am calling this coin a VF20 overall. I think I will hold out for a stronger one though.

I know what you mean about not being able to grade coins until I get them in hand. Of coarse, I've seen coins drop a grade in hand just as often as they go up in grade.

On this particular coin, for example, I can't tell for sure if it's original or not by the pic....once it arrives it might obviously have had an old cleaning (one which left it yellow ugh) and has somewhat retoned....cleaning from the 50's maybe.

If the guy does indeed take lower offers, that's good, but like I said, I wouldn't even gamble on this coin for anything above $80.

edit.. just saw your last post, I'm glad you concur with my grade, IHC are one of the series I've collected for a long time.

I think I would grade this an F-15. While all the letters in the headband are visible, I don't believe the base of the headband is complete. Also on the reverse the tops of the leaves and bow are worn smooth and not very detailed.

I factored in the weaker reverse with the relatively strong obverse with a full LIBERTY and a lower ribbon commensurate with the grade, albeit weaker than most VF20's I've seen. It does appear original with "appear" being the key word. If the photography is reasonably good, you can make a pretty good estimation based on cleaned/not cleaned. This is my favorite U.S. series

I think the headband, LIBERTY, and the hair/ribbon junction puts it VF20, all things considered.
I'm unsure about that zipper-like mark on the neck, and the scratch towards the eye.
The price for the grade seems reasonable. Rick Snow would retail this coin around $175, maybe lower for some probs.

I agree (VF-20 on obverse and F-15 on reverse) Average them to F-17.5 and round to F18. LOL

CDN Ask is $120
My offer, if I was considering it, would be lower than this.

What is going on that connects the tops of 'F AMERI'? Other than that, and the zipper-like mark on the neck (accident with a staple is my guess), it looks like a nice corrosion-free example of an 1878.

Rick Snow might ask that much for this coin, but that's also if it were slabbed, then rechecked by Rick Snow and given his "approval stamp", then bumped up another $50 for kicks. VF-20 coin, and not a nice one at that. $80 coin, and not one I'd buy.
