I have 100's of coins that I need photographed. I don't want to spend a fortune on photographing it :) Are there any photography services that anyone would suggest that is not too expensive? Please let me know.

I've thought about doing this at some point in the future, but I don't have the time right now. I also am nervous about being in possession of others' valuable coins, insurance and whatnot.

Craigslist or some other local reputible source would be something that I would look into.

Or it would be a great opportunity for you to practice!

A recent thread on Canon Powershot cameras might be of interest... For the number of coins, the cheapest route might be getting an inexpensive point-and-shoot that happens to have decent macro, a tripod and a couple Ikea lamps. There's a learning curve, but it doesn't HAVE to be expensive.

The labor charges for shooting 100 (or a few hundred) coins would surely be more expensive than a basic coin photography setup. It might even be cheaper to get a really sophisticated DSLR+bellows setup if it's a lot of coins.

This caused me to do some idle thinking about volume imaging. I think, with my setup which is heavily-optimized towards this end, I could probably reach the quality level I'm accustomed to in about three minutes per coin. That's the total, from picking it up for the first time to saving a processed image that's ready to post online. Obviously, the shooting and postprocessing would be done as individual batches at differing times, and it's conceivable that I could do it a tad faster with Gimp scripting - although I doubt I could script a crop, everything else lends itself to a script.

So we'll call it two minutes per coin, 30 per hour flat-out. I would not apply skills I've taken years to learn for free; even with that kind of efficiency I'd still be wanting about $1 per coin.

At that rate, the cost of shooting 500 coins or a little more - if you're careful about your expenditures - will put you into imaging equipment every bit the equal of mine, and I will teach you how to use it all here in the forum, for free.

Just sayin'.

Thanks everyone! I am thinking of probably learning how to do it instead of spending a lot having someone else photograph them. SuperDave, I might start another post about tinkering with the DSLR to get the perfect picture. Thanks :)

Please do, we'll be happy to help. List what you're using for equipment, and offer a couple of examples if you have images ready for critique.
