... but I am too tired to go search for this, When and at what locations will the solar eclipse occur this year? A coin acquaintance of mine is making the trip "down under" just to see it. Hope it does not rain! I cannot blame him. A once in a lifetime experience. Thanks, mates.

In case it's not obvious by glancing at the websites already linked to, the May 2013 eclipse will be annular, not total. So it won't be quite as spectacular as the one we just had. Quote: Hope it does not rain! The paths of maximum eclipse for both the last one and the next one just pass through the tip of tropical north Queensland. It''s the wettest part of the country, and May is towards the end of the official Cyclone Season. Even if its not actually raining, clouds are highly probable. The watchers in Cairns for the last eclipse had views partially disrupted by clouds.

I am one of a very few fortunate enough to see a total solar eclipse. Truly, it is a 'one off' lifetime experience. That for me, happened near Bombala in Southern NSW, way back in 1974. It was out in the open countryside in in a farming environment. I had known that it was going to happen, having reviewed an astronomical almanac some years previously, when I was around 10 years old.
At about 4 PM, the sun started to develop a characteristic crescent shape. At about 80%, the sky started to become dark. The cattle in the pastures started mooing, and the birds started twittering, and took to the air, looking for somewhere to roost, for what they thought was the approaching evening.
At total eclipse, which lasted for almost 2 minutes, was a rather sinister looking jet black disk, where the sun once was, and with the countryside very faintly lit by the sun's corona. Small wonder why a caveman, who would have had no explanation for what was happening above him, would have been very frightened.
During the period of total eclipse ONLY, you don't need eye protection to see it. For a small period either side of total eclipse, I viewed what was going on in a reflection in the windshield of my car.

AHA! So John Frost missed out on the show in Baltimore, MD. (16 Nov 12) I have helped assist him three times staffing an educational table at a regional show. Thanks mates!
