I got this spade coin from a family member who got it in Japan. He knows nothing about it. Geniune, and if so, what period? Forgery? Tourist copy? I have no idea myself.

It's from China but these are heavily counterfeited. I'm not well versed in this area so I'll let the experts determine if it's genuine or not.

It's very doubtful that your 'three hole spade' is genuine. They are a very rare form of currency and are best explained at this link:-

Thanks, gxseries and aiglet7. I suspected as much. I am going to assume it is a copy unless someone should make a case for something else. I do not collect copies or forgeries, so my uncle was most likely fooled. I don't know what he gave for it but I assume it wasn't very much as lavish gifts have never been a family policy.
