I was walking down the street in a neighborhood and found this on the street in a plastic case. I have no idea if it's real, and I suspect that it's a fake, but I just wanted to see if the experts here could possibly quickly tell if it's a fake. Pictures are attached. Thank you for your time. Also, please be aware, I have no idea what grading systems are, so please go easy on me. :) Jerrett   |

That's what I thought, it didn't look like the authentic ones I saw elsewhere on the internet. Also, the stars look a bit different than the authentic ones. Thank you for letting me know, though. It does look like it was struck in real silver, so maybe I could melt it down into something useable. :P

This particular counterfeit is featured on this "rogues' gallery" website, under the nickname "lightweight." According to their info, it may have a silver coating on a copper core. If you were to chop it in half for us, in addition to doing the world a favor, you could also show us what's inside of this style of phony these days! http://drapedbustcoins.reidgold.com/page_7.html |

Well, since I know it's not worth anything, I could definitely do some surgery on it if it could benefit the community? :) I'll get back to you once I figure out where I can get something that can cut through it.

Of course it is fake, and I hope you didn't fork over too much for it. A genuine 1799 DB dollar with any luster at all values well into five digits.
Your fake may have a bit of silver in it, probably a copper core, and is worth the melt value.

As I said in my original post, I was walking down the street and found it on the ground. Thankfully, I am out no cash on this, however, I'm pretty sure someone out ther probably was very upset they bought a fake.
