I plan to list this coin soon. It's my oldest US coin. Any thoughts on grading and description?

VG obverse, FR2 revers, Net G6 details. Porous surface....ground find/environmental damage.

If someone will second my opinion, I think you could also add variety S-130 to your listing.

I'd emphasize that is one of the oldest US government regular issues coins (1793 being the first) and it has an even color. I'd stay way from grading and just provide a clear picture like you have. Maybe crop the obverse picture a bit more. It is a very old coin and it is one year older than my oldest! I have a 1798 in similar condition.

I don't think the high end collector will be interested, but people love to have the "oldest" coin possible, so I think it should sell. It the picture is clear, the bidders will know what they are getting and will be happy when they receive it. It seems like it is in the $20-$60 range wholesale/retail and you can check the sold ebay listings.

Thanks Bababooey. Of course it will sell, and I'd be surprised if it fetched anything less than $80, but you never know. I've listed five or six DB large cents (several 1798s and an 1802) over the past few weeks and all have done well, though this is the roughest example of the lot. (Still, $20 would be simply absurd, and I'd pay $60 for this in a heartbeat).

Amida is probably right -- this coin has spent some time in the ground.

Philadelphian -- the lettering and punch position sure seems like S-130. Still, I was wondering if it might be something else, like a 120b. Hard to judge with the corrosion, but it seems like it might be a "gripped edge", if I understand the term.

The S-120 and S-121, both a and b, have reverses of '96. This is reverse of '97.

i agree with Bababooey. I wouldn't state grade, just a nice clear pic will do the trick.

I agree. I do this often with coins even though I'm fairly confident in it's grade.
Let the coin sell itself. I'd personally start it at 99 cents, 10 day auction and see where it goes.
The 40 cents for the extra 3 days is well worth it IMO.
