Gil-galad Pillar of the Community United States 2044 Posts	Posted 01/27/2012 2:59 pm This seller that I've been getting deals for asked me to attribute this Roman Republic coin and I have done so. But not by any books since I don't have any, but by other coins that I have seen. So, he said he would be giving me deals in the future as well, so why not help him a little bit? I told him that I would attribute and give him a market value for the coin as well as an offer which of course will be lower. I done a search and found coins around $65 USD in a little better condition. This coin seems to be common, as far as Roman Republic coins go. I would like opinions as to it's authenticity, market value and what would be a good offer for it, for myself. Since I wouldn't mind having one Roman Republic coin. Roman Republic Anonymous AR Denarius Sometime around 180-170 BC. Obverse, Roma facing right. Reverse, Dioscuri riding right. Roma in exergue. 19mm, 3.6g I would appreciate any opinions. Bing Pillar of the Community United States 4253 Posts	Posted 01/27/2012 3:34 pm I am not very good at attributing Republic coins, but I came up with this attribution: Anonymous AR Denarius of the Roman Republic. After 211 BC. Helmeted head of Roma right, with triple earring, spike above visor, X behind. / The Dioscuri riding right, ROMA in linear frame below. Syd 168, Cr53/2. The value for this coin in slightly better shape than the one you show is around $55. I hope this helps Report this Post to the Staff

The same dealer has a nicer one at £ 85.00, a couple at £ 125.00 and one even better at £ 200.00. I'd place the OP coin considerably below any of these since a little bit of condition makes a great deal of difference in price. $30 perhaps? The coin is worn but still shows the legend and most important detail. I might discount it a bit for the reverse centering losing both the stars to wear and each of the Dioscuri should have a star. It is a good place to start collecting denarii since it was one of the early ones. Later coins of the same type add the name of the moneyer in the field. They are not rare coins but desirable as the early type of the series. Report this Post to the Staff
