I got this penny off of ebay a few years back. The seller's pictures were really poor. He didn't seem to have a very good camera setup for coins. But it was only listed for a few bucks, and I couldn't resist.

Unfortunately, there are a few scratches on the obverse. The coin has some strong details, but something is off. It's got some strange coloring on the reverse. There also seems to be a "milky" sort of finish on the top half of the obverse. Can anyone inform me as to why the coin looks like this? Is it natural toning or the result of a cleaning or maybe some sort of damage? What would be the value of this coin? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

To CFF!

Well, the cheap price imideatly raises red flags for me... That coin looks MS 60, worth (according to the notoriosly wrong Red Book) $20... The pictures aren't the best (no offense) and I'm new at detecting cleaned coins, but I'd say it looks like it has been cleaned. For instance, a coin that has that mush mint luster should have "cartwheels" of light on it, and I'm just not seeing that. Like I said, I'm new so just wait until the experts post

Not a really expensive coin even in fantastic shape. Yours appears to be starting to tone. And yes it does appear to have been cleaned a little. No dirt anywhere inside letters or numbers sort of gives that away. Yet still a nice coin for over 100 years old.

I have one just like this and the little scratches don't bother me as it declares history...I prefer circulated as uncirculated seems too impersonal. The coloring I have seen like this in the past can be possible Rainbows...picture is too dark to tell and sometimes you cant tell til you decide its for your own personal collection. Then you can shine and bring out the beautiful colors ! Cheers !

Well.. It looks like it was worth a few bucks, the reverse is just starting to tone some, not a bad coin.

If your talking about the mark on the first 9 it is a ding not a scratch. Maybe a dip in acetone might help? Read up on using acetone before you try it.

I'm more than a little bothered by the look of this one. The exaggerated filleting at the rim on both faces; the granularity of the reverse fields; the level of wear by comparison to the "finish." Something's really wrong here.

Well, Ssuperdave has a better monitor than I so he can see better.

To me this does not look like an uncirculated coin. It may have been cleaned, but it is not clear enough to be sure. I do not think you got robbed nor do I think you got a great deal.

The one thing I would like to say is the time for these questions is before you buy. If you are in doubt of a coin then pass. Another one just like it or better will come along soon.

The details look absolutely horrible for a normally well-struck 1909. The obverse appears to show some patches of parallel striations, possibly indicative of an unmerciful whizzing. If it has not been whizzed, the next most likely explanation is that it is a counterfeit.

This may have been a dug coin. Some are so corroded that cleaning is needed to ID the coin. Unfortunately this breaks the cardinal rule. This looks cleaned to me. Light wear can be seen on both sides of the coin. Decent details though.

Corroded, cleaned, and whizzed....sorry. You can see the effects of past corrosion on the O in ONE....looks like the bumpy fields.
