Today I received this 1851 Half Cent. It looks fine to me, but it weighs 5.30 grams on my scale. Reference works say Braided Hair Half Cents weigh 5.44 grams.

I was burned a year ago by a counterfeit Flying Eagle cent that was underweight, so I thought I'd better ask here if this .14 gram tolerance is acceptable for an authentic 1851.

What do people think? Is it a genuine mint product?

Are there any known fakes of this coin?

Thanks.

Looks good to me. Just a small amount of honest wear.

Looks good to me. You may want to re-calibrate your scale.

I did weigh some other U.S. coins and it may be my scale is a bit off. My 5.0 grams Buffalo nickel came in at 5.14 grams and an 11.34 clad Kennedy registers 11.24 grams on my scale.

I did find this fake 1851 at Aliexpress, but I don't see any distinguishing marks on it that tie it to my coin.

But you can't be too sure these days.

Its real. I see the misplaced 1 about 1/2mm to the right of the date, a diagnostic for the only variety for this issue, C-1.

I noticed this extra metal. That's for letting me know what it is.
