I think I may have gone a bit overboard on this one but it spoke to me and I really thought it would make a nice addition to my modest set of Large Cents:

1856-Large-Cent

I paid $37.50. What do you think?

Don't know if those are scans or photographs. Scans are sometimes good at hiding surface marks.

I see a pretty good little gash on the hair in front of the ear. Otherwise this looks high xf-low au. A steal at $37.50.

If the images are accurate, and it is around that grade, know that similar coins sell for $85-$120 all day.

Besides the nick behind the head and what appears to be a rim bump at 8:30, I would grade it around AU-50.

First off $37.50 is a great price. The coin does have some problems though like ScottK and Nickel Guy stated previously.
The coin does show AU-50 details but being a member of Early American Copper I have to deduct 1 net grade for the big rim bump. The mark in the hair is slight so I'll leave that alone but I will deduct it 1 more grade for the retoned finish giving the coin a net grade of EF-40.
This is die variety N-18, slanted 5 with a common rarity of R.1. So the EAC grade and attribution in my opinion is 1856 N-8 R.1 50/40.
Even with a net grade of EF-40 you still got a good deal.

does have very nice AU details on it. Not crazy about color differences with retaining but for the price paid I like it.

There's also what looks like a small divot at 12 o'clock on top of the hair. Scans can also make nice coins look poor. You probably got a good deal on this one. Will be interesting to see a 'real' photo when you get it

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input.

I hope it looks as good in hand as it does in these images (scans, probably).

Do people think that the color on this coin is original, or has it been cleaned and retoned?

Just asking. I'm still learning the ins-and-outs of early coppers.

Although I'm not sure, I suspect it may have been cleaned at some point in the past. I understand that's not unusual for circulated coins this old. So I'm kind of OK with it.

As for the color, the image may not be completely accurate.

I'll have a much better idea when I have it in hand.

At that condition & price-point, I would buy 10. Excellent!
She sure is pretty.

Yes I believe so. The problem's isn't that it's been cleaned but that it hasn't retoned very well. That's one of the reasons I deducted a net grade from the coin. The big rim bump at 8 o'clock is the other.
