You see a lot of 1886-S half eagles on ebay but the Philly coin from that year is relatively elusive. How would you grade this recent purchase?

The fields don't allow me to call it MS but it is well struck with good luster. I agree with the consensus of AU++, probably a 55 or 58.

AU-58. Just the least bit of wear on the letters on the reverse. Nice coin!

Thanks for your comments!

This coin has no wear that I can see. Luster is very strong with just a slight muting in the obverse fields which I attribute to (very) brief circulation. There is moderate chatter in the fields as noted but no serious hits. I don't see any hairlines or other evidence of cleaning. The consensus grade of AU-58 sounds right to me.

The coin came in a sealed flip with a "certificate" from Littleton Coin Company. They called it AU-50. Maybe I'll keep my eyes open for other pieces sourced from Littleton.

I would have said AU-55 to 58. The bagginess on the obverse seems a bit much for AU-58.
