I know you should NEVER clean your old coins...but I am slowly going through a TON of Lincoln Pennies / Jefferson nickels / Roosevelt dimes and a bunch of them have grime on them from being left out or left in pants for a long time that has clung to the coin . Its like a soft but hard blue white colored lint. Should I try to get this off of these and if so, how can I do it safely? Or should I just put those coins aside and forget about them?

Thanks, I have a LOT of these to go through, so knowing if I should put these aside in a pile to clean or just toss them off as regular pennies, roll them up and cash them in will help me out... I appreciate the help!

start with water. Soak them overnight and see what comes off.
Rest in Peace

Acetone (pure, not nail polish remover) will remove a lot of the organic and soft crud. I'd be very cautious about water, tap water has too many impurities, will cause long term damage. Try soaking overnight in closed jar of acetone, rinse w/ CLEAN acetone, then if still dirty wash off w/ dishsoap(grease remover) and filtered/purified water.

The green crud on copper is verdigris, xylene or verdi-care on that crap.

How grungy can they be if they were in pants pockets and you just want to dump them back to the bank ?
