I purchased a group of LC-5 Bouquet Sou tokens and have some questions. Charlton lists 6 varieties: open vs closed wreath, reeded vs plain edge, thin vs thick bow with pictures showing the wreath. The photos showing the thin vs thick bow are of two different grade pieces and are not very distinctive to my eye.

1. Are there any other markers to look for to help distinguish between the thin vs thick bow?

2. Charlton mentions die break a DA of Canada. Several of the pieces have a die break at TR of Montreal. The die pairs I have include: no die break at DA or TR, die break at DA only, die break at TR only, and die break at DA + TR. Is this typical of the LC-5 group?

3. Charlton mentions that Thompson identified over 20 varieties but doesn't mention who Thompson is. I checked the RCNA library list with no results for a Thompson. Several google searches also came up empty for Thompson and Bouquet Sou. Does anyone have any info on Thompson or his work?

4. Are there other markers for varieties I should look for?

Thanks in advance for your responses / assistance.

From an old Bell auction lot.

Important Study Lot of the Banque du Peuple Sou, Breton 715, CH LC-5 - This lot of 61 pieces formed the basis for George Thomson's definitive study of Breton 715, which appeared as "A Mystery or the Open and Shut Case of the Maple Leaf Wreath: A Story of the Hart," in The CN Journal, vol. 42, no. 4 (May 1997): 171-182. Thomson's article is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in the bouquet sou series and his documentation of the varieties of Breton 715 provided the entries for CH LC-5A1 to CH LC-5A6 in the Charlton Standard Catalogue Canadian Colonial Tokens. The lot includes 6 of the scarce open wreath examples, one of which is said to be with a plain edge; 21 closed wreath examples with the dot between T R of MONTREAL; 20 closed wreath of the so-called Ferguson variety with the die flaw between DA of CANADA; and, 14 regular closed wreath varieties. As per Thomson's article, there are specimens with thick or thin bow to the wreath, open or closed C in CANADA, and on planchets of varying thickness, not to mention other minor characteristics which were not reported.

Excellent Rob! Thank you very much. I have a copy of that CNJ issue and sure enough there it is.

I also have trouble with those pesky bows. I would be interested in that article also. Any chance of getting a copy ?
My family name is also Thomson, so when anyone would ask my father his name to write down, he would say, "Thomson, dry, no p(ee)".
