It was free and in really good condition. My mother had it in a box of stuff in her attic. She doesn't collect coins so she has no idea why she had it or when she acquired it. It is dated '64 but doesn't mention the existence of the then new Kennedy halves. Did they release each edition 9 months before the year actually started then like they do now?

Like new cars, they usually come out in the fall preceding the "issue" year. The 2009 Red Book is an anomaly coming out so soon. Then again, cars do it sometimes as well; my 2001 car was "released" in April of 2000.

Nice find, and a nice start to a Red Book collection. Why not start one today?

I mean afraid because I've even sent messages to Whitman Publishing complaining about ALL their editions coming out almost a year in advance. For example the 2008 edition came out in April, 2007 just as the 2009 came out in April of 2008. Dennis Tucker, the publisher at Whitman for the Red And Blue books told me that has been a tradition since the very first edition in 1947. Back then the 1st edition came out in 1946 and that has been the tradition ever since. Sometimes they don't make it to all the coin stores, coin shows, etc until May, June or even July, but all are for the next year. I even asked why. Again, I was told just tradion. This has always irked me no end since that is probably the main reason non of the prices make any CENTS.

Oh, forgot. Great find there Bowfin. I've seen editions in the 20's at flea markets but never anything previous to that. Keep it in great shape.

Until the 2009 book came out this April, I would never see them until the fall.

I saw an article once, I believe it was in The Numismatist. I think I saw the article in the early 90s and it was an older article then. Anyone have access to older articles? It listed different editions and their values. I had one that was listed awfully high, don't remember the year, but my copy was "well loved". I used to have quite a few Redbooks, but I think I tossed most of them after hauling them one too many times. I'll look at home to see which editions I have.

AAHHHHHHHHHH. You just made me cry. I collect the Red Books. Hearing about them being tossed is like saying you tossed an old coin. If you have the 2009 Edition on pages 408 to 411 there is a listing of all the old Red and Blue Books and their approximate values. One has a missing page but I can never remember which edition that was. I know I do have that one though. Someone told me there is one with an upside down page but never seen one so not sure. Oddly enough the prices in the Red Book for coins is usually over what they should be but the older Red Books are selling for way more than they themselves list.

I know I shouldn't have thrown them out, but I purchased all of them from the 60s and 70s for around 25c each. I did find that I still have three left. I have a 5th edition (1952-53), a 7th edition (1954-55), and a 45th edition (1992). I generally do not collect US coins too much so I don't have a current RedBook, anyone know the values listed for these? Of course the next question becomes, does anyone want these?

Jay's Dad:
VG is not = to a coin, it has very little use, no damage, and no writing. About a coin's VF. F = (for a coin) AU. Near mint, little usage, no loose pages, no writing, signatures, etc.
Some coin book selelrs used to use a grade of VF, but this was just for coin collectors who could not co-ordinate the grades.
There should be no sun fading of the spine! [this is important for collectors of these books.] also, the amout of gilt on the cover & spine are essential in the overall grading.

5th Edition is per the 2009 edition as follows: $130, $260, $450 in VG, F, VF 7th Edition is $45, 65, 90 in same conditions. For selling them try ebay or somewhere on these forums. You would probably make the most on ebay though. Too bad you got rid of all the others. At coin shows I've seen signs saying for sale a complete set for some astronomical prices.
