1868 Shield Nickel FS-905 Reverse Of 68 (No Broken Letters).

The coin has VF details, but suffers from what looks like a case of verdigris. I am a strong advocate of never clean coins, but anyone out there have any suggestions of preservation? I'm sure you can count yourself as one of the few who have sought out and captured those varieties. Providing a full report here with those varieties would be very educational. As far as cleaning, does anyone have any alternates to acetone that are safe? Ive been boiling some in water, and it is helping, but I have so far avoided doing this to anything outside of some modern pocket change to test the approach. Boiling does bang them around physically so you have to find a way to prevent that. We need a sticky on coin safe methods... Report this Post to the Staff

Finn70 Valued Member United States 251 Posts	Posted 11/22/2019 10:54 am The results after a 24 hour acetone soak and a fresh acetone rinse. I then just let it air dry with no rubbing or patting: Disappointed in the results. It removed some of the green gook, but the acetone soak solution had no discoloration to it at all, and the coin now has a overall dull appearance to it. Any further suggestions or just 2 x 2 it?
