Hello, This 1943 D steel penny is a learning experience for me. The front of the coin didn't impress me because of coloration. I flipped it and saw the back looked mint. So, would this wheat be considered ms 60 or ms65? I would welcome input.   |

Looks like the reverse was well protected, probably in a folder of some sort.

Agree with BadT. I've come across many steel cents in folders with a near pristine reverse and a dull/spotted obverse. Consider soaking the coin in acetone (handling the coin carefully). Don't expect miracles, but perhaps a minor improvement.

Cheapest place is probably a hardware store. Should be in with a lot of other solvents in jugs, often around the paint section.

How do you do use acetone? Do you wear rubber gloves while putting in acetone? I assume you don't scrub it - how long should it sit in solution? Does it need rinsed off with water after soaking?

Use acetone in a smallish glass jar with lid. Acetone evaporates very quickly, and it is flammable. Just let the coin soak (submerged) for 10-20 minutes. Use a Q-tip to blot the acetone off the coin immediately after removing it from the jar. If some material comes off but some remains, repeat the soak--perhaps for a few hours. Rinse the coin in distilled water and blot dry. Yes, no rubbing!

I don't believe Acetone will do anything to this 43-D but it will not hurt it , so go ahead . Make sure you use Industrial 100% Acetone , Not Nail polish remover .
Your coin looks MS just obverse is toned down .
