AR Yuán - Dollar (38.5mm, 12h). Central mint at Shànghai. Dated year 3 of the Republic (AD 1914). Bust of Yuán Shìkai left / Denomination within wreath. L&M 63H; KM (Y) 329. Reading up on this issue, it appears that this is the "Triangle" variety recognized by NGC. The triangle is found in the top of lower character in the reverse. Apparently this indicates that this coin is a restrike from 1949 during the year of the Chinese Communist Revolution. Also, the main mint producing this coin was in Tianjin which is a city near Beijing in its southeast by the sea, not Shanghai. I am unsure where the restrikes were produced, apparently during the Chinese Revolution. numismatic student Bedrock of the Community United States 11963 Posts	Posted 03/26/2024 3:29 pm https://www.jstor.org/stable/42667176 According to Wright's 2003 article in 'The Numismatic Chronicle' titled "The Yuan Shih-k'ai Dollar (Y. 329) - A Review" linked above, the so-called 'Triangle" Yuan reverse is called M1. In Wright's research, M1 is found in two issues paired with the 1914 first year obverse among the estimated 1 billion + Yuan Shikai Dollars issued over 40 years: 1. The 1926-2? issue from the Mukden mint, 89% silver, Kann.648e and 2. The 1950s issue from the Chengtu mint (for Tibet), 89% silver, Dong No.865 Apparently NGC only recognizes the Chengtu (struck for Tibet) issue in the 1950s as having the 'Triangle' reverse. According to Wright, there is a slight variation in the edge between these two issues. The Mukden coin has a square edge that fades to one side, while the Chengtu minted coins have a slightly rounded edge. Hopefully I can discern from these two edges with the coin in hand.
