Question: How Do You Decide What To Keep In Your Personal Collection?

First time posting as I'm new to coin collecting I never really understood the hobby until I was doing some research into how to best store my late fathers coins from his travels, and as I learned more about all the varieties and errors that could be found just within my own countries circulation (Canada) I quickly fell in love! I've started collecting Canadian nickels, dimes, and quarters, just from everyday transactions and am keeping one per year/variety. I'm wondering if anyone collects in a similar fashion, how do you choose between duplicates which one you keep? Obviously whichever is in better condition, but I find it hard to choose sometimes. Do you put more importance on one characteristic than another (i.e., smudges, nicks/scratches, how worn the profile is)? I've had a few duplicates where one may have no scratches or nicks, but is fairly smudged, vs one that's extremely clear, but has a couple nicks, and I find it so hard to decide! I'm guessing it's mostly to do with personal preference, and was wondering what others preferences were! Thanks in advance for any thoughts -Em Report this Post to the Staff

The only denomination that I coin roll hunt is Jefferson nickels. When I stash nice examples of 2004-2005 Louisiana Purchase bicentennials and 2006-2023 Monticello nickels in rolls, I insist on a sharply struck early die state. The lettering must be crisp. I would personally favor a well struck EDS nickel with a few dings over a mushier LDS coin. At least for Philadelphia nickels, I don't see as many Denver nickels here. The coin also cannot have any crud on the surface. 1970-1989 nickels, I judge on eye appeal and condition. Anything 1990-2003 must be full steps. Report this Post to the Staff

The condition also plays a role as well. The other coins that are only worth face value gets spent or get turned in for cash. Errers and Varietys. I have narrowed my interests to 4 areas and intend to keep most of them. I have about 100 duplicates that time permitting, I will dispose of. Scratches and staining are issues to be addressed when considering condition. One exception is a sentimental dime my mother won playing bingo in the rehabilitation home. Report this Post to the Staff
