This turned out to be quite the engaging discussion. I would agree that a lack of advertising space is a partial reason to the heft magazines most once had, yet question the shift towards digital due to cost. The primary goal for any advertiser is a specific target area of product being marketed. The who, when and where. Modern technology has made nearly everything available in an instant, something physical printing and mail could not achieve. The point I'm trying to make is that it's not necessarilly cheaper to run a digital ad as it is a printed version, rather to maximize how often it is seen and by the largest number. For the time being I think most coin magazine providers (or others) are profitable enough to satisfy a dwindling subsciber base. For this reason alone, unless the current generation somehow embraces physical magazines the end is certainly near. But I'm holding out that the two formats can coexist.

As soon as you subscribe digitally, advertising becomes more efficient. Advertisers can pinpoint content to previous categories of goods you've purchased, etc. That is, every subscriber gets a personalized, targeted set of ads with their digital content.

Part of the reason print media is doomed.
