Someone else bought a coin through an on-line auction (shame on me, never again). It weighs 26.78 grams, it is 42.2 mm diameter and 2.2 mm thick. See photos. My question is whether anyone has seen period counterfeits (that is, coins struck back in the late 1700s or early 1800s to pass as genuine) or if it is more likely to be a current fake coin. The Obverse has a clear double strike on the effigy. Edge looks good. Not my coin so person is viewing if edge has 180* overlaps. Potosi can be tough. Hopefully someone has seen this before and can shed some light.

CCC vs Regal: Key Considerations
Double-struck effigy: This is a hallmark of CCC production, especially when the doubling is bold and misaligned. Regal mints had tighter die control.

Edge impression: While the edge appears well-executed, the lack of 180° overlap is a strike against regal origin. CCCs often replicate edge tooling but not rotational precision.

Dimensions: The slightly oversized diameter and slightly light weight are consistent with CCCs, especially those struck on locally sourced planchets.

Potosí mint: This mint is notorious for high-quality CCCs, especially from the late 18th century. Many were struck to circulate alongside regal issues and are extremely convincing.

I have tried to purchase a couple of Potosí Charles III 8rs over the years and they have turned out to be regal in my opinion based on specific gravity (the horror!). The counterfeits obviously exist, as documented in Swamperbob's book, but after 5 years of dedicated ebay watching I think they are pretty uncommon. Based on the admittedly grainy images (especially the nice dentils, correct castle punches) and weight my take is that this is regal, to be confirmed by specific gravity testing.

Yes. There is some poor QA/QC in Potosi seen occasionally and with metrology being spot on I think only Swamperbob or Realeswatcher can say otherwise. So its regal IMO - even with these minor trivial anomalies. Thanks 350.

Pics aren't great obviously, but looks regal with obverse doubling, John. Things are a little "better" at Potosi by this late 1780s date. The really crude years, with the diesinking being really haphazard, are more the mid-1770s to the earlier 1780s.

The bigger possibility than a CC here would be modern fake. There are a few Potosi moderns floating around, but far less than Mexico and I haven't seen this before.

The off strike and bust are suspicious. Pass.
