I'd appreciate your judgment of this 1857-O Liberty Seated dime
Problems? Grade? Your valuation (so I don't pay too much)?

My opinion is authentic, low VF range with likely an old cleaning.

Why have you posted this in the US Modern coins forum?

I'm going to ask a moderator to move it for you.

obv XF45 rev looks XF40. old cleaning may be acceptable.
however, I dont like the staining. it it cant be mitigated therefore it could pull a code (98) for ED. I think i'd pass on it.

Nicks on the face, unattractive staining. Might pull an EF straight grade from a TPG.
Unless you're getting a great price and only need a hole filler, it's an easy pass.

Thanks, y'all. So, except for nickelsearcher, $95 delivered is a fair price?

A hole filler for some is the best others can afford. But I don't want to overpay and regret it later. I've already kind of blown my coin budget for months this morning. But, adding a bit more ain't gonna break the bank.
If I should hold off for a better specimen without spending a lot more, I can be patient.

I guess the real question is, can I do better for the same ballpark price range? From what I've seen, maybe not.

For what it's worth, Greysheet retail for XF40 is $85 and XF45 is $135.

Thanks, Adam and everyone who offered their opinion.
It will have a new home in my Dansco 7070 by the end of next week.
I've blown the lid off my coin budget for the next few months, spending nearly $400 in one day. Cool it for a while, Vector!

if it did in fact make XF45 full retail of say $135 then $95 would be a good price if it graded straight. if it came back XF40 then its overpriced.

if it slabs as details then its boarder line at XF45. so, its going to be a risk either way unless it pulls a straight XF45.

personally I would rather have a lower grade straight coin than a details coin and at the price for an XF40 coin I would continue looking for a slabbed XF40 coin for that price range. in this case I think there is too much risk that it would grade a straight XF45
