*** Edited by Staff to Add Year and/or Mintmark and/or Denomination to Title. It's essential to have it in the title. ***Straight grade ms63 pcgs but looks scratched. Did the TPG mess up or is this something else? I know tpgs screw up but this one is so big. Could it be some kind of die scratch and that's why it's not "damaged"? Could the scratch be on the holder and not the coin? Hard for me to tell. Also, it would help if we have full obverse and reverse shots.

Looks like a light scratch to me.

So did the TPG mess up? Or because it's a key date they just let it slide? I guess I don't understand how they "missed" it so seems intentional. Here's the true view.

You don't really see it on a few of the pictures - must only show when the light hits it a certain way - maybe the grader had the light at an angle that he didn't notice it.

Some scratches only show up when the light is in a certain direction. Grader felt it wasn't bad enough to "details" it.

i agree w/Marv. keep in mind they only have a few seconds to assess a coin. the lighting may not have hit that area long enough for the grader to see it since its so light. TPG's dont always get it right, we have proven that time and time again. grade the coin itself when looking at slabs. its subjective imo the coin should have been detailed for it

I've given up on grading Peace dollars. This coin does not look like a 63 to me, ignoring the scratch.

I agree with @panzaldi and @psuman08. The number, location, and depth of scratches are at issue, and the recency of scratches may be at issue for grading. Here, the bulk of the scratches are in the fields, rather than the central devices. Some of the scratches are light, but there are quite a few scratches. In addition to the long scratch, the obverse has quite a few small nicks and scratches on the tiara, in the hair, in LIBERTY, and in the left obverse field, as well as scratches on the cheek and neck. The reverse has nicks and scratches on the tail, neck, and in the left reverse field, as well as an edge contact in the sun rays.
I can't get past MS-62 here, and I think it is possible that it could be detailed on a regrade. It's certainly a tough date and is an UNC with great luster and original surfaces. It's baggy, though, and that would attract the wrong attention on a bourse floor.

Thanks for all the input. The seller picture showed a scratch but it didn't come close to capturing the severity of it. Based on all the feedback I will be returning the coin. It's just too expensive to hang on to, I know I'll always be disappointed if I keep it. At this point it's simply an example of a TPG dropping the ball. I knew to grade the coin and not the slab but I didn't think pcgs could mess up this bad.

I see low end 63. Looks like a light scratch they let slide. If this was a common date I could see them let it go.
