Well, now that I have the right name, I found out that Andrew Salmon was the author of a book (with his son Ken Salmon) on the sinking of a ship, the Lisbon Maru, which was transporting POWs from Hong Kong to Japan in 1942. He worked in the Hong Kong Prisons from 1949-1974. He died in 2000.

I found a website that has a personal WW II Pacific theater diary of an Andrew Salmon, who apparently died in 2000. I wonder if this is the same man. The diary was posted by a man with the same last name. Possibly a living relative?

@FortCollins, that is certainly the same person. Andrew Salmon kept diaries, and that book I mentioned is partly based on those.
