I don't know if these are rare or not but hadn't seen one until picking this one recently. Quite strong doubling for a variety not in the CPG.

That's very nice doubling on a Flying Eagle cent. That doubled die is categorized as 1858 Snow-6. NGC will attribute that as VP-005, but it doesn't seem like PCGS attributes that variety as a specific catalog entry.

Could be a rare snow 7. I have one I bought from Rick Snow and this variety is hard to determine on coins with below XF grade. I think I see the attributes, but it would take professional grader to identify.

Jimbo makes a good observation.

From the guide I have, S6 is low leaves reverse, S7 is high leaves reverse.

It's hard to see the faded leaf by the C. No idea if it's directly high or low leaf. But on HL, the broad leaf next to the thin leaf is flush with the wreath. On LL, the tip protrudes outside the wreath envelope. So this reverse looks a bit HL to me.

Theoretically, S7 is an 1858/7 RPD, FS-302 weak overdate. Although PCGS has two different DDO coin types attributed as S7 on the reference page. One doubling type matches this coin, the other has doubling underneath rather than over.

Having gone through one more reference, I now see that DDO-001 corresponds to Snow-7. I hadn't really been able to make out the overdate in the photos above.

Thanks so much for all the comments! I know little about flying eagles, and merely went to Wexler's site, saw what appears to be an exact match to WDDO-002, cross referenced as DDO-001 (CONECA) and Snow-3. But now it appears there is more than one die with similar doubling. The left leaf is high while the right leaf is low if that helps. I see nothing that looks like the overdate. Looking forward to actually nailing this down as I was going to submit it to ANACS as I think it's worth a slab with that strong doubling in decent condition.

Well, that's confusing. 1858 WDDO-002 has a cross reference to CONECA DDO-001 and Snow-3. But the catalog site above cross references DDO-001 to Snow-7.

Is there a teeny bit of the top right 7 corner peeking out above the 8? And possibly a bit of 1 left of the main 1? They aren't kidding when they call it a weak overdate. It's practically invisible.

Also confusing: the three top PCGS plate coins for 1858/7 weak overdate FS-302 have two obviously different doubled dies portrayed.
