ExoGuy Pillar of the Community United States 4422 Posts	Posted 02/25/2011 10:52 am Brunk doesn't list this counterstamp in his volume on American marks. I don't have his work on world countermarks. However, most counterstamps have yet to be listed. The letter style suggests to me that this is an early mark - pre 1840 or possibly much earlier. The letter I in IW&S was often substituted for a J. The &S is quite likely intended for "& Son." Report this Post to the Staff
golditiki New Member France, Metropolitan 5 Posts	Posted 02/25/2011 1:16 pm i agree that it is an old mark due to the lettreing but it is not a french one because the pmrking in such case should have been & F for fils not S so the coin has been countermarked by anglo-saxons ( most likely ), or germans ( not excluded ). The idea that it could be a JW & S is also a good idea, There are JW & S in the english hallmarks I believe, will investigate. ps the coin is 1774 and N mint ( = Montpellier southern France Marseille isn't far off so it could have been shipped to the US during the french revolution or american war with Britain.
