Cleaned Key Date Coins - Coin Community Forum

snowman Pillar of the Community United States 1840 Posts	Posted 10/18/2006 8:16 pm Sooner or later I'm going to have to suck it up and buy a pair of 1932 Washington quarters with letters under the eagle to complete a set. From time to time I wonder if I'd be better off buying a cleaned coin in order to attain a higher grade. The purist in me says don't do it. But on the other hand, wouldn't a coin with some detail be nicer to own? I was just wondering if anyone else ever considered buying a cleaned coin. Report this Post to the Staff

If it's a dog that price better be pretty low or I'd pass, nobody wants an ugly coin, but if it still looks nice I could live with it for the right price. Report this Post to the Staff
Becky Pillar of the Community United States 954 Posts	Posted 10/18/2006 9:54 pm Not all cleaned coins are dogs. A lot of older coinage was cleaned, it was perfectly acceptable. I have a few key dates that are cleaned. I can handle them as long as they didn't have Brillo taken to them. After a couple of decades sitting in an album and toning, they are very acceptable to me. I get a higher grade coin at a better price, and a key date is always a key date. Report this Post to the Staff

This means that you may not have to compromise to get a much better coin. Report this Post to the Staff
