Sooner or later I'm going to have to suck it up and buy a pair of 1932 Washington quarters with letters under the eagle to complete a set. From time to time I wonder if I'd be better off buying a cleaned coin in order to attain a higher grade. The purist in me says don't do it. But on the other hand, wouldn't a coin with some detail be nicer to own? I was just wondering if anyone else ever considered buying a cleaned coin.

Snow man. I think there's a battle of wills going on here. The little red guy and the little good guy . With that said, I think the answer you are seeking is obvious!

I would imagine it all depends on what it looks like and the price.

If it's a dog that price better be pretty low or I'd pass, nobody wants an ugly coin, but if it still looks nice I could live with it for the right price.

Not all cleaned coins are dogs. A lot of older coinage was cleaned, it was perfectly acceptable. I have a few key dates that are cleaned. I can handle them as long as they didn't have Brillo taken to them. After a couple of decades sitting in an album and toning, they are very acceptable to me. I get a higher grade coin at a better price, and a key date is always a key date.

Good point Becky. A key date is always a key date cleaned or not. If you pay a little lower than book value then I wouldn't see a problem with it.

the good thing about those two coins is that there is very little difference in price between an XF and a VG specimen. This means that you may not have to compromise to get a much better coin.

I passed on a 1909S Wheat cent for $70.00 one time, because it had been cleaned. It was still a nice looking coin, and now I wish I had went ahead and bought it.
