Well this is not a coin. However I was hoping all my buddies at CCF might be able to help me figure out what the heck this is, because I have the suspicion it might be quite special, and if nothing else its pretty cool. So I have this gold cane top, its 16k gold and it is well over 100 years old. it weighs almost exactly 1 troy oz. It is all handcarved and is a octagon shape. I keep believing it was made for the former 1854 mayor of san fransisco, however I am not sure and thats why I wanted some help. So heres the facts: Been in my family 70 years but probably much longer (great grandmother gave to my dad, he gave to me) on the bottom in fine (i believe stamped lettering) it says "GARRETT & SHERWOOD SAN FRANSISCO CAL Then along the bottom in bigger hand engraved old english writing it says "AHP Oct 28/ 1889" I am not sure of the initials though, I can only make out the A for sure but there are 3. Then on each of the 8 sides of the piece it alternates between a unique design then engraved words. The 4 worded sides say "In Memoriam O Garrison" "To the Hon C.K. Garrison" "Mayor of San Fransisco" "Jan 1st 1854" Identified - moved to Exonumia forum - Sap

Very nice piece you have there.
I'll have a couple of antique experts look at your pictures and see if they can come up with an answer.
The first thing they are going to ask.... Is it for sale.

Looks like the top piece of a walking stick. There was probably a semi-perious stone on the top, missing now.

Yeah I have no idea what happened to the stone. Dont believe it was there when my dad got it.
Yes it is for sale of the price is right :)
Also I found out CK Garrison was CORNELIUS K. GARRISON the mayor of San Fransisco and died in November of 1853. I am not sure what the Hon part meant, but judging from google its possibly a term used back then, possibly like Sir or some other type of title.

your correct, "Hon" probably meant Honorable, as in "the Honorable C.K. Garrison".

Could possibly be a candle holder or some sort. What ever it is, it is nice!

oh its 100% a cane top, just missing the top jewel.
I have thought about refitting it on a new cane with some nice gem. However I am not old enough for canes so everyone would probably assume iw as an 80s pimp.
so now I am just left with trying to figure out of its worth double, triple or even much more times its gold weight value. Because I sure as heck aint selling it for gold weight :D.
