I would have to say somewhere in the VF-20 range because of the wear showing on the hair, ear and breast feathers. If not for than that the coin would be AU. Can't see much for bag marks and still has good luster.

Hard to tell if it's a fairly well circulated coin that's been messed with or perhaps an AU coin with a pitiful strike (very possible being an O-mint Morgan).
I guess I'd need to have the coin in hand, under the light, examining the remaining luster to determine it.

Hi jd
This is the coin on your list that Iam interested in and was just about to send for pics.
Since I'm interested in buying the coin, I will let the others work with the grade,, I have an opinion but we can discuss that in our emails.
Rick

is it a VAM-14 ? maybe not just something looks weird with that date to me, could be just the pictures but when I first saw it I was thinking the date was shifted and started looking in the book and the only thing I saw that describes anything like it is a VAM-14

I'd call it VF30, maybe better, with a really weak strike, and agree with the VAM-14 designation. The breast isn't clear enough for me to be comfortable, but I could see that coin at 35 or even 40 depending on the strike.

Jordan, without those spots on the obverse, I'd say around F-15 to VF-20, maybe even VF-25, but I think PCGS *might* body bag it with "environmental damage". That ding at 12 o'clock on the obverse might also keep it down. The reverse appears in better condition, but are we looking through plastic to give those striations on the reverse? It has a lot of apparent luster for a circulated Morgan or is that reflections off plastic?

J ordan, I just d on't see it being MS. Even the weakest New Orleans strike w ould still sh ow m ore sharpness and detail on Liberty's hair ab ove her ear and f orehead. Her hair is just t oo flat f or MS. There's als o a l ot of marks on the obverse face and fields which l ooks m ore like circulati on marks than bag marks. The reverse is a little t oo fuzzy t o make a g ood judgement on the breast feathers, but there's m ore justificati on f or an MS grade on the reverse than the obverse. The only argument f or MS is in the luster on b oth side. C onclusi on: this is a trick c oin. If it gets submitted, I'd be very interested in h ow it c omes back.

The c oin is on it's way t o Rick t oday. I believe he's a raw man, s o we may never kn ow what the t op TPG's w ould grade it at. I am sure it w ould n ot make financial sense t o send it in, but as a... I d on't kn ow what I am l ooking f or here... maybe fr om a learning p oint of view it w ould be nice.

I opened this thread, not remembering I'd already posted in it, and spot-graded that coin at AU50. It's an atrocious strike, but it must be noted that there's no way that the ear and nearby hair would show that kind of circulation wear without corresponding noticeable wear elsewhere on the coin. For those of you who own a VF Morgan, do the comparison. By the time the ear's worn that bad, there's much less detail in the hair below it, and the reverse should look correspondingly bad about the wingtips and wreath. I've never seen an '88 New Orleans strike that bad, but I have seen '02s and '04s that weak.
In fact, I won't rule out believing that to be an MS coin. How do the dentils look? There should be noticeable rounding if that's wear on the obverse.
Mea culpa.

Dave, putting apparent luster (or reflection) aside on the reverse, the obverse image is a little too fuzzy to make a good determination of its possible wear, especially on the breast feathers.
Rick, when you receive the Morgan, give us an eyeball opinion.

Given the overall uncirculated appearance, I'd c onsider that it might have been Struck Through Grease. Unless there was a seri ous flaw in the planchet I d on't think even New Orleans c ould put out a strike this weak.
