A child should be able to do this one. Only ten to choose from & one update. All attributted to date doubling or date position. What about doubling on both lips, chin, and four of the right stars? Just forget about these factors on this date?

Welcome to the world of VAMming

Every VAM has PUPs (pick up points) that people use to identify it. If you aren't looking in the same spot, you can miss them. Check the date PUPs really close and see if they are on your coin. If not, it may be that this is an undiscovered VAM, or just a little bit of Mechanical Doubling. It really does look like Mechanical Doubling to me.

Becky, I agree on the Mechanical Doubling, but isn't 99% of the doubling on Morgan & Peace dollars mechanical? Why did Van Allen & Mallis deem this not worthy to mention? Surely with 5,884,735 minted there are some errors. Maybe my train of thought has gone off track, if it is worth mentioning in other years, why not in 1898?

Don't lose sight of the fact that these guys are/were humans. I think perhaps standards that constituted a VAM were different in 1878 than by the time they reached 1898.....

They should never put a VAM number to mechanical doubling(which is an error), a VAM is a die pair(a variety). Leroy did give VAM numbers to Grease Filled Dies early on, but stopped doing so later.

Mechanical Doubling is a one time shot. Only 1 1922 Peace dollar has this exact doubling....

By comparison, there are hundreds of Gator eyes and Hot Lips because it was the die that was doubled, not the strike....

Does that help? It took me forever to understand the difference.

Thanks much Becky, next time I'll use the bridge instead of taking the train thru the muddy water.
