Hi there. I was looking through some old rolls & found the nickel shown below. There is a 'crows foot' marking along the jaw line, and just happens to be, more or less, at the center of the nickel. Initially I thought the coin was a victim of the sorting/counting machines. However, after staring at it from all possible angles with magnification, I'm thinking that it could be some sort of die chip. There is a smooth transition around the marking.

I've never seen this before so I'm stumped. The coin is not very eye appealing and I hope the photos show enough detail.

Any comments would be very much appreciated.

Hi Staircase. The 1965 nickel you have come in multiple varieties. Small, medium, large, and doubled large. Yours looks like the large version.
I alway's called them die clashes, but a filled chip would make more sense.
It sure is in a spot where a clash would not occur.
I think it is interesting.

Thanks nick, I appreciate your comment. I suppose the marking is very common, I only thought it might be of more interest here. After searching far too many of these rolls, this was the only anomaly I could find for the 65's.

Certainly I won't stop looking for more.

Look for the lathe lines on the reverse side, they are pretty rare. Only 2 people have found them.

Hi there. Just for information, I wanted to post a photograph showing the original nickel alongside another found today. These are probably very common...

Looks great. Small and large. When you get enough posts I will give you the other 2, medium and doubled large.
Good luck in the hunt. You might have to remind me. BU's are best.

I found the same signature marking on about 10% of 1966 nickels I checked. The occurrence on the '65 coins was a much lower percentage. I realize it is not a major flaw, but I was surprised to see it carry over from one mint year to the next.

I have not had the oppertunity to look at the 66,s. Yesterday I got 2 circulated rolls and found 2 parcial lathe lines, 1 large die chip, and 8 cameo to heavey cameo. The only other year I can get is 1964 in uncirculated.
