I have the opportunity to buy a Short-Lived coins of the 20th century 9 coin set. Problem is, I've googled it trying to find any info on this set & can't! It comes with the following:
WALKING LIBERTY SILVER DOLLAR,YEAR 1916.
KENNEDY SILVER HALF DOLLAR,1946.
KENNEDY BICENTENNIAL HALF DOLLAR,1976.
WASHINGTON BICENTENNIAL QUARTER,1976.
SUSAN B.ANTHONY DOLLAR 1979.
SILVER Jefferson nickel,1942.
EISENHOWER BICENTENNIAL DOLLAR,1976.
LINCOLN SHELL-CASE PENNY,1944.
LINCOLN STEEL PENNY,1943.

My questions would be, have you heard of this set? & What's a reasonable price for this set?

The Walking Liberty has to be a Half Dollar and the 1946 Kennedy is probably a 1964. A lot depends on the grade of the coins. Unless they are in really high grade the silver coins will probably be worth around melt value and the other coins will only be worth a little more than face value. The 1916 SLQ is probably the only valuable coin in the collection.

it sounds like a generic set similar to one I bought off craigslist last year, except mine had a lot more coins...17 I think, everything from morgan to IHC. I paid $40 for mine. and they were all in pretty decent shape, a little discoloration from being stored in a framed cardboard thingy.

Well, looks like I won't be buying it, as he's asking $45

Have you seen the 1916 Half? That is the key to that set. If it is in a high grade then $45 is a good price. If it is well worn then forget it.

This set sounds/smells like one of those put together by the Franklin Mint or the Washington Mint, Littleton, or the Home Shopping Network or someone along those lines.
I just have a feelin'........
I've seen these in "coin magazines".....mostly the ones from "private" mints though....and they're usually WAAAAAAYYYYY overpriced for what you get.
The coins are just in "average" condition, which basically means the silver would be "junk silver" coins that they are re-packaging to make more money.
And being in a "distinctive" kind of fancy schmancy custom packaged "Set"......they'll even charge ridiculous prices for common Wheat Cents, Steel Cents, Indian Heads, whatever, but "common" coins.
It's just a "packaging ploy" to market a product to folks who think they're getting something "really cool" and "old".....but they will pay a lot more money than they should, just for the packaging of common coins.
Here's some info on "20th Century Type Set" collecting.

If it was like THIS one.....then I'd be more interested.....a more complete a more true "Type" set......

Here's the old pics (had to dig deep to find em) of the set I had bought.

Short-Lived-Coins-Of-20th-Century-Set
The cheap cardboard was framed in some old cheapo frame. Popped the coins out as soon as I got em home.

These are the coins that were in the "set". Not bad for $40, had to rescue these guys from sitting in that frame any longer. The guy I bought them from said they were his dads and had been in that frame for at least 20 years.

I've bought one or two like that too........the reverse side was indeed UGLY !
The guy made it himself..decades ago...and was very proud....but all he did in the end was damage the coins in a neat frame with cardboard. Just reduced them to either "junk silver" or near face value for his efforts.

But that one you've pictured is still a more true type set (even though it's old) than the one the o.p. listed, I think.
I've seen the one "he" described before, I'm sure of it.

i just wish the guy had a liberty head nickel and SLQ when I bought it. but I still think I got a heck of a price. my main motivator for buying it was the morgan and Peace dollars. everything else I considered bonus.

I've got two frames of WWII era Canadian and British coins but the guy had stuck tape at the back to hold them in the shoddy frame. I'm gonna get some acetone to remove the tape residue, see if the tape didn't damage them. If it did, it's still worth 2 times as much in silver than we paid for it ($40 in silver, paid $20 for both)

I bought a 20th Century Type folder, but it's not just for the short lived series. It includes:

Cent
Indianhead
Lincoln Wheat
Lincoln 1943 Steel
Lincoln Memorial
Lincoln copper plated zinc

Nickel
Liberty Head
Buffalo
Jefferson wartime silver
Jefferson

Dime
Barber
Mercury
Roosevelt silver
Roosevelt clad

Quarter
Barber
Standing Liberty
Washington silver
Bicentennial
Washington clad
50 State Commemorative

Half Dollar
Barber
Liberty Walking
Franklin
Kennedy silver
Kennedy silver clad
Kennedy copper nickel clad
Kennedy Bicentennial

Dollar
Morgan
Peace
Eisenhower
Eisenhower Bicentennial
Anthony

and it also includes an area for a birth year type set.

I like this as you can use any date of a series you want with the exception of the 1943 Lincoln steel, 1964 Kennedy half dollar and the bicentennials. Makes it easy to fill which I'm close to done. It's my first attempt at a type set, and think I'll try a 19th Century type set and see how far I can go with that.

This is the one I have. Complete and it didn't break me.

For that $40 that is a sort of a great deal. Nothing to loose with those. Nice going.

i definitely didn't have to think twice about snatching those up. wish more deals like would pop up on craigslist, instead of a million guys offering to "buy your silver and gold". annoying.

Thank you Eaglefoot, that's the exact type of explanation I was needing. Sounds exactly like one of those type of sets.

Jhedichef: looks like you scored pretty good with that set. I have also been searching CL for some good deals, but haven't gotten any yet
