This is a half Follis of the emperor Phocas 602-610 minted at Nicomedia in the 5th year of his reign. He was a very nasty character and met his fate as he lived, badly.

I just wen and read about Phocas. Very interesting time in history that I know little about. Phocas seems like an interesting character. This is the kind of thing I tell my wife about. Collecting these coins leads to other discoveries I wouldn't have ever known otherwise. Thanks for the post. Nice coin.

I don't mind the coins produced in his name.
I have lodged a bid in a current auction for a solidus of this guy at $475.
The artwork for this coin is typically rough, but at least it is a whole lot better than the bronze issues.
